Cesarean Operation

Cesarean section, commonly known as C-section, is a surgical procedure performed to deliver a baby through incisions in the mother's abdomen and uterus. While vaginal birth is the preferred method in most cases, there are instances where a C-section becomes necessary for the safety of both the mother and the baby. Understanding the procedure and what to expect during recovery can alleviate concerns and help mothers prepare for this surgical intervention.

Procedure

Preparing for Surgery

  • Before the surgery, the mother is usually given anesthesia, either spinal anesthesia or epidural anesthesia, to numb the lower half of the body while remaining awake. In some cases, general anesthesia may be administered.
  • The surgical team ensures the mother's vital signs are stable and monitors her throughout the procedure.
  • The abdomen is cleaned and sterilized, and a sterile drape is placed over the area.

Making the Incision

  • The surgeon makes an incision, typically a horizontal or vertical cut, through the abdominal wall, usually just above the pubic hairline. The choice of incision type depends on various factors, including previous surgeries and the reason for the C-section.
  • After the abdominal wall is opened, another incision is made in the uterus.

Delivering the Baby

  • The surgeon carefully delivers the baby through the incisions in the uterus and abdomen.
  • The umbilical cord is clamped and cut, and the baby is handed over to the pediatric team for assessment and care.

Closing the Incisions

  • Once the baby is safely delivered, the surgeon closes the incisions in the uterus with dissolvable stitches.
  • The abdominal incision may be closed with stitches or staples, depending on the surgeon's preference.
